International Students also Serve as a Resource for the Surrounding Community...and viceversa

Most of our students live with Chilean families to learn first hand about our culture, ways of being, ways of life, etc. Chilean families also feel grateful to have a foreign student in their homes. To help them to succeed in this new life experience, Chilean families participate in workshops where they receive information about the do’s and don’ts they need to bear in mind in order to meet this amazing but sometimes contradicting experience. They even receive some tips about second language learning to help the students in this new language acquisition process. Sensitive mothers, for example, modify the way they speak when addressing their international daughters and sons by repeating the content of a sentence but with grammatical corrections. As a result, many students who live independently turn to opt to live with a Chilean family. Living with a Chilean family gives the student the opportunity of this “caretaker talk” necessary for understanding how to interact in conversations and use the language appropriately. It has been observed that if a student stays with an affective Chilean mother, the faster the acquisition of the language is for the student. Please visit http://experiencechile.blogspot.com/
